Regional History

Where do we start!

The Nievre department is historic and if you’re a lover of architecture, stone, trees, wilderness, art and culture this is the place for you!

Chateaux around (almost) every corner!

Some of our favourite places are:

Chateau Bazoches – history of Vauban, Richard the Lionheart, Crusades and more. Just amazing history and descendents still live there today.

Vezelay – start of the Way of Vezelay pilgrimage route, amazing place, restored cathedral, views that go on forever, a fortified village on a hill now filled with artists, just so interesting!

Guedelon – an amazing experiential archeological experiment – hand-building a 13th century chateau from scratch. One for all ages. Spend days here – especially if you are a lover of lost trades.

Clamecy – our nearest largest town. Has a fantastic museum showcasing Gallo-Romain ruins from the area (there was a large Roman influx some millennia ago).

Nevers – a city of beauty on the river, great food, beautiful and seemingly never-ending things to explore.

Auxerre and Avalon – two amazing small cities with 1000 years and more of exquisite history, superb architecture and arts. Great markets and brocantes in finer weather.
